Materials such as steel, cast iron, non-ferrous materials and structural steel are a challenge for conventional drills. The low feed rate and the high wear on the drilling tool often make machining difficult and expensive. The GEN3SYS XT Pro high-performance drilling system from Wohlhaupter is designed for difficult-to-machine materials and is designed for drilling applications with high drilling depths. The drill bits have been specially developed for ISO material classes P, K and N and are available in a range between 11 millimeter and 35 mm in diameter in 0.1 millimeter increments. In combination with a large range of holders, the XT Pro drill holders are available in lengths from 3 to 10xD.

The available inserts are provided with a high-performance coating designed for specific materials. For steel, Wohlhaupter relies on the high-strength multi-layer coating AM420; when machining cast iron, AM440 is used; In the case of non-ferrous materials, the cutting inserts are coated with TiN. "An American manufacturer of motorsport vehicles uses our GEN3SYS XT Pro drilling system using the 'K' geometry with AM440 coating to minimize wear when machining ATV suspensions made of cast iron," reports Manuel Rothweiler, product manager at Wohlhaupter. “With this coating we were able to increase the speed without losing the cutting edge due to wear. The XT Pro also enabled the feed speed of 203 millimeters / min. to 1,110 millimeters / min. and all while maintaining the required surface quality of 1.6 Ra µm.” The increase in the feed rate also reduced the machining time from 23 seconds to four seconds. As a result, the vehicle manufacturer was able to increase its productivity considerably while maintaining the same surface quality.

Especially for material classes P, K and N
The geometry of the steel materials (ISO class P) is ideally suited for steels with low and medium carbon content and alloyed steels. The ISO class K geometry was developed for cast and nodular cast iron applications and includes a corner radius for improved hole processing and heat distribution. Their multilayer AM440 coating offers increased abrasion resistance and tool life. The geometry of ISO class N is characterized by its suitability in softer materials such as aluminum, brass and copper and leads to excellent chip control. The TiN coating enables flexible processing of the most varied of materials while reducing the set-up effort.

Holders for the GEN3SYS XT Pro series feature a new flute design that improves chip evacuation, as well as an improved coolant configuration that facilitates coolant flow.
